Azelaic or Salicylic Acid: Which for Post-Acne Marks and Redness?

The pimple is gone, but its memory lives on — a crimson mark that stays for months. Salicylic acid, the hero of the acne fight, somehow stalls here. That's because marks and redness have a different specialist: azelaic acid.
How it works
Salicylic (BHA) — the pore brush. The oil-soluble molecule dives into the pore, dissolves the sebum plug and calms inflammation. Its jurisdiction is what hasn't happened yet: clean pores don't become pimples.
Azelaic — peacekeeper and eraser in one. It does three things at once: suppresses acne bacteria, slows the melanin-producing enzyme (so dark post-acne marks fade), and dials down inflammatory redness — so gently that it's one of the few acids allowed for rosacea and during pregnancy. The only price is patience: first results in 4–6 weeks, plus possible light tingling early on.
Look for in the list: Salicylic Acid (0.5–2%); Azelaic Acid (10% in cosmetics, 15–20% in pharmacy formulas) or its gentle derivative Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate.
Don't mix: the two acids get along fine (split them morning/evening), but keep each away from retinol in the same application while starting out.
Choose salicylic if

- your skin is oily and pores clog;
- marks and spots are still few.
Choose azelaic if
- breakouts are under control but the post-acne marks remain;
- redness, reactivity, rosacea;
- pregnancy — high-dose salicylic is discouraged, azelaic is allowed.
Common mistake. Expecting instant results from azelaic acid and quitting after two weeks. It's a marathoner: pigment and redness fade slowly but steadily. Give it six to eight weeks before passing judgment.
