'Liquid keratin' won't become new hair — but it does have an honest job.

The ads promise: keratin will "rebuild the hair's structure," lamination will "seal" it in a film — salon hair at home. Both promises fudge a little, but real mechanics stand behind each. Just humbler than the commercials.
How it works
A keratin mask contains hydrolyzed keratin (Hydrolyzed Keratin) — protein broken into fragments small enough to slot into porous stretches of the hair shaft and temporarily fill the gaps. Hair gets denser, breakage drops. Keep it clear-eyed: these are patches, not regeneration — some washes out with every shampoo, so the effect lives from mask to mask. Mind the protein balance too: overloading makes hair stiff.
Lamination works on the other side of the cuticle: a film-forming mixture (polymers in salons; often gelatin — collagen, basically — at home) sets on the surface as a smooth sheath. Light reflects evenly — there's the mirror gloss; hair looks thicker, frizz lies flat. Nothing penetrates: it's a glossy case over the same old contents. Washes off over a handful of shampoos.
The choice is essentially "patch from within" versus "polish from outside" — and those are different jobs.
Choose a keratin mask if
- your hair is porous, bleached, snapping and "gummy" when wet;
- you want a cumulative strength effect, not just looks;
- you're ready to alternate it with moisture masks.
Choose lamination if

Common mistake. Laminating dry, damaged hair instead of caring for it. The film hides the problem for a week — while underneath, the hair stays just as brittle, and the coating blocks actual care from getting in. Repair first, gloss after.
Fun fact: "liquid keratin" in a formula is usually hydrolyzed protein from sheep's wool. A relative of your hair, but not its clone: permanently grafting itself in isn't possible at any price point.
