Foundation or BB Cream: Which One for Every Day?
BB cream was invented by a dermatologist — and you can still feel it in its character.
foundation is about coverage: it evens out everything from redness to dark spots, but demands skill and proper removal. BB cream is a hybrid of skincare and light tint: it evens things out "to a B-minus," but nurtures skin, applies by fingertip in a minute, and forgives mistakes.
Every morning, the same choice: full foundation that "holds the face together," or a light BB that lets skin breathe. The answer depends not on fashion but on what you need covered — and how much mirror time you've got.
How it works
Foundation is pigment in a cream base — and plenty of pigment: coverage from medium to full, dozens of shades per range, finishes from matte to glowy. It can hide post-acne marks, visible capillaries and pigmentation. The price: careful shade matching, blending tools, and mandatory thorough removal — a dense pigment layer left overnight is close friends with clogged pores.
BB cream (blemish balm) was conceived differently: a skincare cream with some pigment added. Moisturizers, often SPF, a light texture — and translucent coverage that "improves" skin rather than repainting it. Ranges usually offer just 3–5 shades — the light pigment adapts to your skin. It won't hide serious imperfections, but it needs no brushes and no special removal.
The choice boils down to this: makeup with a skin effect or skincare with a makeup effect.
Choose foundation if
- there's something to cover: post-acne, capillaries, pigmentation;
- you need a going-out look with staying power till evening;
- you enjoy the process and know your way around blending.
Choose BB if
- your skin is generally even and just needs freshening;
- mornings give you five minutes for makeup;
- you can't stand the feel of a layer on your face.
Common mistake. Expecting foundation coverage from a BB cream and stacking it to full opacity. Light pigment layered up gives you patchiness, not even coverage. Need more? That's your cue for foundation — or a dab of concealer where it counts.
Fun fact: BB cream was invented by German dermatologist Christine Schrammek in the 1960s — to camouflage skin after procedures. Korea turned it into a global star half a century later, and the skincare roots still show.
