Face Oil or Cream: What Goes On Last at Night?
Oil doesn't moisturize — there's literally no water in it. But it has a different superpower.

Face oils come wrapped in a "natural skincare" halo: a couple of drops and your skin glows. It's tempting to think oil could replace cream entirely. Except oil has a secret the label never mentions: it can't moisturize.
How it works
A cream is an emulsion: the water phase with humectants delivers moisture, the oil phase holds it in and replenishes lipids. A self-sufficient product: apply it and the skin has everything.
An oil is a 100% fat phase. Water content: zero — which makes "moisturizing oil" an oxymoron. What it does brilliantly is occlusion: as the final layer over cream, it seals in everything underneath and reinforces the lipid barrier. Hence the ordering rule: oil always goes last — after it, no water-based product can get through the fat film.
Oils also differ in character: squalane and jojoba are light and barely comedogenic, coconut is heavy and notorious for clogging facial pores. "Natural" is not a synonym for "safe" here.
Choose cream (or cream + oil) if
- your skin is dry: in winter, a few drops of oil over cream is the perfect duo;
- you want complete care in one product — that's the cream;
- you'd rather not think about layering order.
Oil solo makes sense if
- your skin is dense, the barrier is healthy, and there's already a hydrating layer underneath (toner, essence);
- the goal is softness and glow, not hydration;
- you've picked a light oil and you're watching how your pores react.
Common mistake. Replacing cream with oil on dehydrated skin. The oil will seal in what little moisture there is but adds no water — the skin stays thirsty under a pretty sheen. Water first, oil after.
Fun fact: jojoba technically isn't an oil at all — it's a liquid wax. Structurally it's the closest thing to human sebum, which is why skin accepts it almost as its own.
